Born in Sabadell in 1999, her career shows that youth and artistic maturity can go hand in hand. From her earliest steps in flamenco dance, María has developed a strong, expressive style, capable of adapting to different performance formats while remaining true to the essence of flamenco.
Her journey reflects a balance between continuous training and an active presence in flamenco shows in some of the most prestigious flamenco venues in Spain and overseas.
Academic training and artistic development
María Fernández Portela’s work is grounded in rigorous training. She began her studies at the Professional Dance Conservatoire of Barcelona, where she obtained a qualification in Spanish Dance, building a solid technical foundation for her development as a flamenco dancer.
She later continued her training in prestigious flamenco centres, deepening her knowledge of flamenco dance and stage performance. Working with renowned teachers allowed her to expand her movement language and strengthen her interpretative skills.
Throughout her career, she has also taken part in courses, scholarships and professional training programmes linked to established companies, continuing to refine her technique and broaden her artistic vision.
International career in flamenco tablaos
Although Barcelona marked the beginning of her professional flamenco dancing career, María Fernández Portela quickly expanded beyond the local scene. She has performed in flamenco tablaos in countries such as Turkey, Canada, Germany and the Maldives, bringing flamenco to diverse cultural contexts and building an international career that continues to grow.
In Spain, she has worked with dance companies involved in productions such as Flamenco Voyage, choreographed by Ramón Oller. She has also collaborated in cultural performances and charity events, demonstrating a commitment to both the artistic and social dimensions of flamenco.
Teaching, versatility and artistic commitment
Alongside her work as a performer, María Fernández has developed a career as a dance teacher in various schools in Barcelona. Her teaching focuses not only on technique but also on conveying the expressive and cultural value of flamenco to students of different levels.
