Vocal Technique in Flamenco Singing for Beginners
Basic keys to start developing your flamenco voice from scratch
Flamenco singing (cante flamenco) is an intense vocal expression that blends technique, emotion and rhythm. For beginners, mastering the flamenco voice may seem challenging but with the right foundations, it’s possible to make steady progress step by step.
At Teatro Flamenco Barcelona we are proud to include some of the best professional flamenco singers of the moment in our cast of talented flamenco artists performing daily in our popular, live flamenco show in Barcelona, Inspiración. Here are some practical tips from them to help you start working on your flamenco voice.
1. Master diaphragmatic breathing
To feel how diaphragmatic breathing works, place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest. When you inhale through your nose, only the hand on your abdomen should move outwards, while the hand on your chest remains still.
For example, inhale for a count of 4, hold the breath for 2, and exhale for 6 while making a soft “sss” sound. Repeat several times to become aware of breath control.
2. Warm up your voice before singing
Do simple vocal exercises such as ascending and descending scales in comfortable keys for you. For instance, sing “la-la-la” from a middle note up to a higher one, then slowly come back down. This helps prevent tension and vocal strain.
3. Listen to and repeat short phrases
Flamenco is full of vocal phrases with unique rhythms and nuances. Choose a simple palo, such as tangos, and listen to recordings. Quietly repeat the phrases you hear, focusing on breathing and pitch before attempting to sing them with full intensity.
4. Work on the rhythm, mark time with your hands
Rhythm is essential. Learn to set the rhythm with by clapping the beat for styles such as tangos, soleá or bulerías. Use a metronome or recordings to practise at different tempos. This will help you stay in sync when you sing, a fundamental aspect of flamenco.
5. Always take care of your voice
Avoid singing in very dry or cold environments. Drink water at room temperature and avoid speaking loudly before singing so as not to strain your vocal cords.
6. Practise with a partner or teacher
Record yourself to listen to your progress and make notes on what needs improvement. If you have the chance, practise with a guitarist to learn how to listen to the accompaniment and adapt more naturally.
At Teatro Flamenco Barcelona, you can see how professionals apply these techniques live during Inspiración, the most popular flamenco show in Barcelona, offering a passionate journey through flamenco and showcasing the spirit of flamenco, the duende, and power of flamenco singing.
