What is compás?

Think of compás as the “heartbeat” of flamenco. It’s a repeating beat that guides all the performers. Much like when you listen to a pop song and instinctively clap along or tap your foot without thinking about it. Flamenco has that same pulse, although it can sometimes be more complex.

How can you recognise it?

1. Watch the hand clapping (palmas). Performers often accompany the music with rhythmic clapping. Pay attention: when several people clap together at the same moment, that’s the compás.
2. Look at the dancer’s feet. When the dancer stamps (zapatea), they emphasise the key beats. It’s as if they’re telling you, “This is the rhythm.”
3. Listen to the guitar. Even when it sounds improvised, the guitar follows a steady rhythm. At certain moments, stronger strumming highlights the compás and can serve as a guide.
4. Feel the pulse. Even if you don’t consciously understand it, your body does. Many people start nodding their head or tapping their feet without realising it. That’s already following the compás.
5. Don’t try to count everything. Some flamenco styles use 12 beats, others just four. As a spectator, it’s best not to overthink it. Enjoy the rhythm as you feel it. Over time, you’ll start to recognise the most common patterns naturally.
